Manufacturer calls Gorgonzola cheese from the market due to a bacterial find

The cheese maker Rabe & Freund is recalling Gorgonzola cheese with the name "Cascine di Campagna" from the market. The cheese is mainly sold through the Netto supermarket chain. Consumers are requested to return the goods for a refund of the purchase price.

The dairy company Rabe & Freund is recalling Gorgonzola cheese with the brand name "Cascine di Campagna" from the market. In one batch, the pathogen Listeria was discovered, which can possibly trigger the dangerous infectious disease listeriosis.

Cheese was sold in four federal states
The Gorgonzola was sold in supermarkets of the Netto Marken-Discount chain. According to the company, the bacteria were subjected to a routine check of the Gorgonzola D.O.P. Dolce, 200g, certified by the brand "Cascine di Campagna". After the test results became known, the branches of the chain responded immediately according to their own statements and immediately took the cheese in question out of the range. As a precautionary measure, all batches and best before dates are recalled. The federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse are primarily affected by the recall. Consumers who have already bought Gorgonzola cheese "Cascine di Campagna" should not eat the product under any circumstances, but should bring it back to the supermarket. Upon presentation of the receipt, the purchase price will be refunded without hesitation, as it was said.

Danger to people with weakened immune systems
Consumption can be particularly dangerous for chronically ill people, the elderly, pregnant women and children. The bacterial strains of the genus Listeria can trigger the disease listeriosis. The infectious disease listeriosis triggered by Listeria mostly affects people with a weakened immune system, old people, pregnant women and their unborn children and newborns. The clinical picture - depending on which organs are affected - is extremely different. Very often, patients suffer from sudden diarrhea, abdominal pain and flu-like symptoms such as muscle pain. Complications occur, but can lead to meningitis and, in pregnant women, to abortion or premature birth. In addition, local wound infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea are possible consequences of listeriosis. Conventionally, disease can be treated well with antibiotics. However, due to mostly unspecific symptoms of the disease, an infection is only recognized late, because a connection to the consumption of contaminated food can hardly be established. For healthy adults, an infection is usually rather harmless. Most patients do not notice the pathogen and the infection is without symptoms and complications. (sb)
