Chronic fatigue should be examined by the doctor
Everybody is exhausted every now and then after a particularly hard work day or other heavy physical and psychological stress. In most cases, this is not a cause for concern, but persistent exhaustion can also indicate mental illnesses that urgently need therapeutic measures, according to a current report by the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN).
If the emotional and physical exhaustion lasts for a longer period of time, those affected should in any case seek medical help, explained Professor Wolfgang Maier from the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology in Berlin. These symptoms, often described with the term burnout, can also be signs of serious mental illnesses such as depression, addiction or anxiety disorders, according to the expert. According to Prof. Maier, physical illnesses such as cancer or diseases of the internal organs can also be the cause of persistent exhaustion.
Eliminating causes of exhaustion Although states of exhaustion are to be taken seriously, the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology warned against the inflationary use of the term “burnout”. Rather, the possible causes of persistent exhaustion should be identified and named to enable efficient therapy. If the causes of the burnout are not remedied, further physical complaints such as chronic pain syndrome, ringing in the ears or tinnitus, high blood pressure or chronic infectious diseases are at risk, according to Professor Wolfgang Maier. First of all, according to the DGPPN expert, burnout patients should consult their family doctor to have possible organic causes of the exhaustion checked. If nothing can be determined here, the DGPPN advises referral to a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy.
Preventing chronic fatigue However, not every form of fatigue requires a doctor's visit, according to the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology. If vegetative stress symptoms such as tension, sleep disorders and the feeling of exhaustion only occur for a limited time and a weekend is enough to relax, there is no need for medical action. In order to prevent individual overload with subsequent chronic fatigue and burnout, naturopathy recommends, among other things, methods for avoiding and coping with stress, autogenic training, exercises in the field of Tai Chi or Yoga and various methods from Traditional Chinese Medicine.
