Married people are less afraid of old age than single people

Married women are less afraid of aging than singles and couples without marriage certificates. This was the result of a representative survey by the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK) on behalf of the Zurich Group Germany.

Singles are more afraid of poverty in old age According to the GfK survey, married people are less afraid of old age than unmarried couples and singles. 31 percent of married couples are afraid of poverty in old age, while 42 percent of couples without marriage certificates are afraid of it. Married people are also more relaxed about emotional security, according to the survey. 29 percent of respondents with marriage certificates stated that they fear loneliness in old age. Among the unmarried couples, 43 percent said they were afraid of being alone in old age. A similar result was provided by data from singles and those living separately.

But are married people happier? At the beginning of the year, a US study by Cornell University in Ithaca showed that a relationship makes you happy, but a marriage certificate has no advantages. The opposite seems to be the case, according to the study: couples without marriage certificates are happier than married couples.

Fear of diseases in old age According to the GfK survey, 99 percent of those surveyed want to be at least 70 years old. Almost one in three said they wanted to live to be at least 90 years old, and almost 16 percent wished to live to be over 100 years old. Nevertheless, eight out of ten respondents said that they were afraid of diseases in old age. 41 percent fear that their children or relatives may be burdened with illness or age-related frailty. 41 percent of those surveyed are concerned about the loss of zest for life due to old age.
