Incorrect billing at the Berlin Charité?

Berliner Charité: Accounts are checked

In the medical supply centers in Berlin, irregularities in the billing of medical services have been occurring for a long time. Now the Berlin Charité is suspected.

The clinic's management said that the public prosecutor's office initially suspected that the Charité University Hospital was wrongly billing, which the media recently reported. However, accounting audits have been ordered and a report is due to be submitted in the coming days. According to the Charité, it has commissioned an external auditor to check the accounts for the medical services from 2010 and 2011.

Berlin Charité has bills checked by contract medical services After the "Berliner Zeitung" reported on public prosecutor investigations into billing fraud at the Berlin Charité, the largest German university hospital, relying on information from the public prosecutor, announced that no corresponding investigations are currently underway. However, the suspicion of billing irregularities is currently being investigated by external auditors. The Charité has, according to its own information, commissioned an auditing company to check the accounts for the contract medical services from 2010 and 2011. After the examination has been completed, a report should be submitted to the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Berlin. In this regard, the deputy chairman of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, Dr. Uwe Kraffel, told the "Ärzte Zeitung" that it is currently not clear "what size we are talking about."

Medical care centers with irregularities in billing Medical care centers (MVZ) can in principle be set up by all service providers, such as doctors, pharmacists, or even hospitals, who are authorized under the fifth Social Code (SGB V). In Berlin, some clinics have made use of the opportunity to achieve closer cooperation between the various disciplines, relieve administrative tasks and save costs through synergy effects. However, irregularities in the billing of medical services have recently increased in Berlin's medical supply centers. In February, the state-owned hospital group Vivantes filed several voluntary notifications for incorrect billing, and the medical supply centers of the DRK clinics in Berlin have since been closed again. According to reports, the "Berliner Zeitung" is currently investigating 14 suspects at Helios clinics on suspicion of accounting fraud.

Irregularities in billing are not an isolated case Irregularities in billing in medical care centers do not seem to be an isolated case, whereby the question arises as to whether targeted billing fraud was actually carried out in all cases or because of the extremely complex coding in the billing sheets, those affected simply increased errors undermine. As the "Ärzte Zeitung" reported, the investigations in Berlin also provide evidence of similar irregularities in billing at other locations. So Dr. explained Uwe Kraffel opposite the paper: "I assume that not only Berlin is affected." In Berlin, however, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians has been intensively concerned with the problem for a long time, although a medical care center has already been withdrawn from its approval. The Federal Social Court only confirmed this withdrawal of admission last week, which Kraffel says is a precedent judgment. (fp)
