Headache from a visual disorder

Headache from a visual disorder

Ophthalmologists can also help with headaches

Dull pressure, rhythmic pounding, light hammering - numerous people around the world regularly suffer from headaches. Those looking for causes have often already had neurological, radiological or orthopedic examinations. What many do not know: Sometimes uncorrected vision disorders or incorrectly calculated glasses trigger severe headaches. The age-related farsightedness that begins at the age of 45 often remains unnoticed at first and causes a humming skull. Many find a solution in varifocals. However, their optical properties are often seen as getting used to and can also cause headaches. Refractive surgery procedures - the surgery for ametropia - offer an alternative without a long period of getting used to.

A first step in a headache-free everyday life is a visit to an ophthalmologist. "Regular eye checks clarify undetected ametropia and changed vision," says Dr. Kaweh Schayan-Araghi, board member of the professional association of ophthalmologists and medical director of the Artemis Eye Clinic in Frankfurt. Sometimes fitting the glasses will then relieve you of a headache. Even with undetected farsightedness, stress-related headaches occur after prolonged reading or persistent computer work. For example, screen activity stimulates eyes continuously by sharply changing the gaze between the keyboard and monitor. Age-minded people are finding it increasingly difficult to adjust to different distances. This sometimes causes bad headaches. In addition to a visual aid for the near area, those affected still do not need glasses or their usual glasses to see in the distance. In the latter case, many use progressive glasses so that they do not have to constantly work with several glasses. These correct all visual defects continuously with smooth transitions. Since the visual areas in varifocals are relatively small, their wearers must also turn their heads when changing the viewing direction to avoid blurring between the near and far areas. When looking to the side, the head must also follow the eye movement, otherwise the edge areas will blur. Progressive glasses demand a lot of discipline from their wearers. Because optical distortions not only make wearing glasses uncomfortable, they make eyes stiff and often cause persistent headaches.

Active people in particular perceive varifocals as a limitation. "In order to get along without annoying glasses with increasing age, eye surgery offers those affected special solutions. Corneal inlays, monovision LASIK, intracor procedures or the use of multifocal lenses are just a few examples, ”says Dr. Schayan-Araghi. The most common procedure for correcting presbyopia is to replace the body's own lenses with multifocal lenses. They enable sharp vision at different distances and make varifocals unnecessary. This method is considered safe because ophthalmologists have been replacing natural lenses with artificial ones for cataract treatments for over 60 years. “The main priority is to improve the quality of life in everyday life. Headaches caused by eyestrain are quickly a thing of the past, ”explains Dr. (pm)
