Stiftung Warentest recently tested 15 strawberry jams, 14 strawberry fruit spreads and three light products. Surprising test result: Products from discounters can keep up with expensive branded products. Extra strawberry jam has a higher percentage of fruit If you like to eat fruit jam, you should pay attention to the addition of "extra fruit jam", because according to Stiftung Warentest this indicates a higher fruit content. All strawberry jams tested had a fruit content of 50 to 55 percent, with 45 percent being mandatory. Normal jams must have at least 35 percent fruit. Stiftung Warentest reports that the cheap products from Lidl, Aldi, Rewe and Edeka can compete with expensive branded products. Only the strawberry jam extra from Netto, Norma and the Landliebe jam would be out of the ordinary with the rating "satisfactory", the consumer advocates report.
Processing is important for strawberry fruit spreads According to Stiftung Warentest, the secret of a good strawberry fruit spread lies in the processing of the fruit. This was particularly successful with the Schwartau Fruttissima fruit spread. The fruits would only be heated briefly and would therefore retain their aroma. The fruit spread is the only one of the tested products that has to be stored in the refrigerator. Overall, the fruit spreads also performed well. Every second test product had a fruit content of at least 70 percent. While the composition of jam is regulated in a food regulation, this is not the case with fruit spreads. They can contain more additives, but are often less sugared than jams.
The tested light products for calorie-conscious people hardly differ in taste from conventional products, according to Stiftung Warentest. (ag)
