PCB concentration in eggs is a mystery to the authorities

Authorities are puzzled about the dioxin and PCB contamination of the eggs

The discovery of dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in the eggs of a laying hen farm in the district of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia puzzled the authorities. According to the experts, the composition of the toxins is rather unusual.

The authorities are particularly concerned about the increased concentration of the PCB. A spokesman for the North Rhine-Westphalian State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection (LANUV) in Recklinghausen explained that this is a chemical "material that can be found in transformer oil, for example. So far it is completely unclear how the PCB could get into the eggs, especially since PCB "unlike dioxin is not a combustion product that accidentally gets into the ground - for example, through a fire." so far, however, are still outstanding.

Environmental toxins accumulate in the body for decades In the eggs of the laying hen farm, significantly higher levels of dioxins and PCBs were found, whereby the limit values for PCBs were exceeded by 4.5 times. The company was closed on the month of "by order of the LANUV through the district of Borken, the eggs from sales and trade recalled," according to the official announcement by the State Environment Agency. The eggs with the stamp numbers 1-DE-05 22462 and 1-DE-05 22461 are affected. Since both dioxin and the dioxin-like PCB accumulate as an environmental toxin in the human organism and are hardly broken down by it, consumption of the contaminated eggs should be avoided to be urgently waived. The State Environment Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia warned that "with regular intake, the toxins accumulate in the body for decades" and can lead to disorders in the immune system and, in the worst case, to cancer. Without knowing the actual cause of the increased PCB and dioxin load in the free-range eggs from Borken, it is difficult to assess the acute health risks on site. The result of ongoing investigations into the source of the contamination with tension is expected. (fp)
