Cheap sunscreens are test winners

Good sun protection also from the discounter

Adequate sun protection is currently particularly important in sunny weather conditions. According to the Stiftung Warentest, the motto is: "A lot helps a lot". It is therefore gratifying that even good sunscreens do not have to cost a lot. In a test of 20 sunscreens, the cheap products from the discounter also did very well.

When examining the Stiftung Warentest, the inexpensive sunscreens were almost entirely convincing and even reached the top positions. The six best products out of the 20 sunscreen creams, sprays and oils tested came from the discounter. Good sun protection is available for just a few euros.

High price range for sunscreens Without adequate sun protection, sunburns quickly threaten in the sunny weather, which in turn significantly increase the risk of skin cancer in the long term. For this reason, dermatologists recommend, on the one hand, avoiding extensive stays in the sun as far as possible and, on the other hand, using appropriate sunscreen. However, these can be extremely different in terms of both quality and price, as the result of the current study by Stiftung Warentest confirms. Here, the price range of the examined products was between 1.20 euros and 20 euros per 100 milliliters of sunscreen. But the cheap sun protection oils, sun protection sprays, sun protection lotions and creams were often ahead in terms of quality. The results of the investigation were published in the current issue of the "Test" magazine.

Sun protection products from discounters achieve top rankings Most of the twenty sun protection products tested were able to convince the testers. The grade "good" was awarded a total of 14 times. The top rankings went to the products from the discounter, as these also performed particularly well in terms of moisturizing the skin, the Stiftung Warentest continued. Four sun protection products received a "sufficient" rating from the testers because there were difficulties with their applicability and in some cases germs were able to reproduce too easily. The applicability of the faulty products suffered above all at high temperatures, since the agents became too thin and could no longer be properly applied to the skin. The multiplication of the germs, however, is an indication of the insufficient preservation, according to the testers.

Deficiencies in applicability and the multiplication of germs Two of the investigated sunscreens did not meet the requirements for adequate sun protection because they protect against the UVB rays of sunlight, but do not adequately shield the UVA rays. For this there was a "poor" from the testers. With regard to the shielding of UVB rays, however, according to the Stiftung Warentest, all products met the requirement of sun protection factor 30. All sunscreens were also convincing when it came to skin tolerance. However, according to the testers, the full-bodied advertising promises on some products, such as: "With DNA or cell protection" or "Activates natural tanning" were less convincing. (fp)
