Vacation report 2012 of the DAK-Gesundheit: Especially 30- to 44-year-olds could not recover well in summer
Nature, family and no stress: This is how the vast majority of Germans enjoyed summer 2012. However, more than one in ten vacationers recovered less well or not at all. The 30-44 year olds had the most problems. In this age group, 17 percent had difficulty recovering. Women in particular could not switch off from their jobs. That shows the current vacation report 2012 of the DAK health, a representative Forsa survey * on behalf of the health insurance.
28 percent of those affected cited the bad weather as the main reason why it was not possible to relax well on summer vacation. Family stress spoiled the vacation almost as often. One in five disappointed vacationers failed to switch off from their jobs, with 25 percent of women and only 13 percent of men saying so. 13 percent of the respondents had to interrupt their vacation for work. Eight percent had to be accessible via cell phone or the Internet.
Water and waves instead of internet surfing "Since it is difficult for many employees to separate their work and leisure time in everyday life, this trend obviously continues on vacation," explains expert Frank Meiners from DAK-Gesundheit. “The body and psyche need longer breaks to stay healthy and productive. Water and waves are better for relaxation than flood of information and internet surfing. ”Those who receive professional emails on vacation and cannot switch off as a result endanger their health in the long term. Employers also have a responsibility to protect their employees from this. The double burden of job and family is a particular burden for women on vacation.
Most relaxation through sun and nature The survey by DAK-Gesundheit shows how important the elimination of job stress is for recreation. 60 percent of the well-rested vacationers said that the main reason was the lack of work stress. Among the 33- to 44-year-olds, 76 percent of those surveyed even gave this reason. In this age group, 40 percent also said that giving up their work cell phone or the Internet had mainly contributed to the recovery. The most important thing for vacationers, however, is sun and nature. This was named by 80 percent of all respondents.
Sports and fitness training on vacation Most Germans used their vacation for special health measures. Two thirds of those surveyed completed specific exercise, sport or fitness training during the holidays. A similar number of vacationers reduced their stress. A lot of sleep (52 percent), healthy eating (44 percent) and wellness treatments (14 percent) followed. Six percent of vacationers said they hadn't done anything special for their health. Striking: The activities of the 30- to 44-year-olds were significantly lower than in the other age groups, although they had the most problems with the right rest.
Colds and accidents overshadow vacation Another reason for the lack of rest on vacation was named illness or injury by 14 percent of those affected. Almost every third person had a cold during the holidays. 16 percent suffered an accident. An operation had to undergo twelve percent. Eight percent of those surveyed had a gastrointestinal infection. A similar number got sunburn. Four percent had psychological problems such as Depressions. On behalf of the DAK health insurance company, the polling institute surveyed over 1,000 people.
