Washing dishes or brewing coffee: simple but consciously carried out activities can drive brooding away.
Simple, practical activities can relieve depression. Exercises on so-called mindfulness can help to “see what has been experienced neutrally”, like Prof. Dr. Sabine Herpertz from the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN) in Berlin explained. The exercises help to drive away depressive thoughts.
If depressed people experience something nice or positive, they often rate this negatively. However, special exercises on so-called mindfulness can help to neutralize what you have experienced. Patients with mental illnesses could better control their negative feelings and increase their ability to concentrate, according to the psychiatrist.
Simple Mindfulness Exercises
Simple, but consciously carried out activities such as washing dishes or making tea can already drive away depressive thoughts. "Simple household chores serve as exercises," reports Prof. Herpertz. In addition, obviously senseless activities can be carried out. As an example, the expert cited “trying to put a raw egg upright”. Those affected should try to concentrate exclusively on the egg. All other thoughts should be "pushed aside" in this exercise. This can make it easier to get involved in daily thought patterns or brooding.
Those who start these mindfulness exercises should plan a few minutes at the beginning of each day. It is important to carry out the exercises continuously. (sb)
