Online portal offers doctors the opportunity to evaluate health insurance companies

After several health insurance companies have already launched portals for evaluating doctors, doctors are now turning the tables. With the health insurance navigator, the "first internet portal for the evaluation of statutory health insurance funds by doctors and psychotherapists went online on Friday," according to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV).

"The health insurance navigator offers all resident the opportunity to evaluate the behavior of the insurance companies in everyday practice," explained Dr. Andreas Köhler, CEO of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) on the occasion of today's activation of the online portal. The health insurance navigator exclusively offers the resident doctors and psychotherapists the opportunity to assess the statutory health insurance (SHI) based on practical experience from areas such as bureaucracy, recourse or freedom from therapy. In the end, this should result in a ranking that also serves as a guide for patients.

The behavior of health insurance companies should be transparent
Only contracted physicians and psychotherapists can use the health insurance navigator to describe their personal experiences with the health insurance companies and evaluate them based on school grades. Doctors' assessments on the five categories of freedom of treatment, recourse, bureaucracy, selective contracts and service and information are required. The health insurance navigator also offers the possibility to write comments in free text fields. In addition, current surveys on the behavior of health insurance companies are planned, reports the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. Based on the distributed school grades, a ranking of the health insurance companies should emerge over time. The ratings, comments and the ranking are visible to everyone and also give patients an insight into the behavior of their health insurance. However, the health insurance companies are only included in the ranking if they have been rated by at least ten doctors or psychotherapists, which is currently not the case for most.

Uncover weaknesses in the support of doctors by the health insurance company
For the doctors, the health insurance navigator is an opportunity to strengthen their position towards the health insurance companies. "With this tool, we finally have the opportunity to make the behavior of health insurance companies transparent," emphasized KBV boss Köhler. According to the Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, the portal is also aimed specifically at the insured of the health insurance companies. "Because when the insured rate doctors - which is perfectly fine as long as certain criteria are met - then they should also see whether and how their health insurance actually helps to support good care - or not," emphasized Köhler . This could increase the pressure on health insurance companies to cooperate. So far, possible weaknesses in dealing with health insurance companies with medical professionals have largely remained in the dark. For the first time, the medical profession now has the opportunity to publish inadequate support from individual health insurance companies and bureaucratic obstacles.

Health insurance navigator is supposed to ensure fair evaluations
The "Health Insurance Navigator meets all quality standards that the Medical Center for Quality in Medicine has defined for evaluation portals and that can be transferred to health insurance companies," according to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. Anonymous ratings are not possible. Doctors must register with their full name, lifelong doctor number and email address before submitting a rating. Multiple evaluations by the same doctor regarding health insurance are excluded, but the doctors can update their assessment afterwards, reports the KBV. All comments that were written in the free text fields would be checked before publication to avoid defamatory content. The initiators want to rule out manipulation and ensure a fair evaluation of the health insurance companies. In the end, a ranking will be created that makes the best of the 140 or so existing statutory health insurance companies recognizable. In addition, the health insurance navigator also offers doctors the opportunity to clarify their position in the event of a dispute - such as the current fee dispute with the health insurance company. While the benefits for the insured have yet to prove themselves, the portal for the medical profession already seems to be a real win. (fp)
