Vegetarian diet makes you slim

Vegetarian diet makes you slim

Vegetarians are less likely to be overweight or obese

According to the Vegetarian Federation of Germany (Vebu), a vegetarian diet can help you lose excess weight. A vegetarian or vegan diet has the potential to reduce excess weight. In addition, the slim weight can be held better afterwards.

Vegetarians are slimmer
People who are overweight often have had numerous diets. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows how tedious that can be. So-called “crash diets” in particular hardly lead to lasting success. Therefore, doctors advise against such radical diets because they provoke the so-called yo-yo effect. In the end, those affected are even a little bit thicker a short time later than before. Instead, nutrition experts advise a permanent change in diet. A vegetarian diet could offer many advantages. Because compared to people who eat meat, vegetarians have an average lower body weight and a cheaper body mass index (BMI). Obesity or even obesity are relatively rare in vegetarians and especially in vegans.

According to a recent study on “Health of Adults in Germany” (DEGS) by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), two thirds of men and 50 percent of women in Germany are overweight. "The cause of being overweight is often a malnutrition that is too rich in nutritional energy, animal fats and proteins and isolated carbohydrates and that lacks fiber and secondary plant substances," says nutritionist Prof. Dr. Claus Leitzmann: "Unfavorable products include sausage, cheese and other fat dairy products as well as pastries made from white flour with a high sugar content."

To stay slim, eat fruits, nuts and vegetables
In order to lose body weight and then remain permanently slim, foods that are low in calories and high in fiber should be consumed. These include fresh vegetables, legumes, fruits and salads, which also get your metabolism going and fill you up for longer. Vegetarians automatically take these foods and therefore suffer less from obesity than meat eaters. For example, 100 grams of animal sausage contain 20 times more calories than 100 grams of tomatoes. However, tomatoes have just as many mini-substances as calcium and magnesium. Thus, a vegetable diet provides just as many nutrients, but has a significantly lower calorie content.

Unlike with a conventional diet, vegetarians do not have to give up, but can continue to feast and enjoy. "The vegetarian cuisine is incredibly diverse, especially in the last few years the offer in restaurants but also in supermarkets has increased significantly," said VEBU Managing Director Sebastian Zösch. "The German Nutrition Society (DGE) is now recommending vegetarian food as a permanent diet."

“A plant-based diet is the best thing you can do for your body. Both to lose excess weight, to maintain your desired weight or to prevent lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases or high blood pressure, ”says Prof. Claus Leitzmann, former head of the Institute of Nutritional Science at the University of Gießen. Leitzmann: "It is known that vegetarians are rarely overweight and suffer less from the widespread diseases of affluence."

Vegetarian can be a culinary art
The "VegiTV" team also shows just how versatile vegetarian cuisine can be. Carsten Bergmeyer and Sebastian Bertram cook, fry and bake vegan and vegetarian dishes. "We want to show how diverse vegetarian cuisine is," says Bertram. "Most people think vegetarian dishes are bland and boring." This is because non-vegetarians imagine a plate with potatoes, sauce and vegetables on which the meat is missing. “But those who eat vegetarian food cook completely differently. With our cooking show, which is broadcast on YouTube, we are proving that vegetarian tastes good! ”
