Packaged bread often contains too much salt, according to a recent study by the Consumer Advice Center North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The high salt content could have a negative impact on health, warn consumer advocates.

The maximum amount of salt per day recommended by the German Nutrition Society is a maximum of six grams. If the industrially baked bread is consumed, however, this value is quickly exceeded, according to the results of the current study by the NRW consumer center. Increased salt intake can have considerable disadvantages for health. "Excessive consumption of table salt is poison for blood pressure and increases the risk of dangerous cardiovascular diseases," reports the consumer advice center.

Bread provides up to two thirds of the daily maximum amount of salt. According to the consumer advice center in North Rhine-Westphalia, the high salt content is not only a problem with bread, but with most processed foods. Consumers are often not even aware of the high salt content of the food they consume. Of the 274 industrial breads examined (67 wheat breads and bread rolls, 65 wheat / rye mixed breads, 30 multigrain breads, 98 whole grain breads and 14 pumpernickel breads), 213 contained more than two grams of salt per daily ration. “If you eat three to four slices of packaged bread from the supermarket or discounter a day, you might be consuming“ two thirds of the recommended daily dose of salt ”with this amount,” according to the consumer advice center in North Rhine-Westphalia. The spread, such as sausage or cheese, is not yet included.

Few loaves of bread with low salt content According to the consumer advocates, the eleven packaged loaves from the wheat, mixed and multigrain range even reached "three grams per daily portion." Only a product made from whole grain and grist was clearly salted here. According to consumer protection officials, a salt content of 1.1 grams of salt or 0.45 grams of sodium per 100 grams of bread would be ideal. However, this value is not achieved with most packaged breads. Only “nine breads (three percent) had a relatively low salt content, so that the usual amount of bread is used to deliver a quarter or less of the maximum recommended amount of salt per day,” reports the Consumer Advice Center NRW. In terms of health, consumers are strongly advised to use these low-salt alternatives. Overall, only 22 percent of the bread remained below a third of the daily maximum of six grams of salt when the usual daily portion of four bread slices (approximately 178 grams) was consumed.

Reducing the salt content in breads According to the recommendations of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the bakery industry and craft should generally reduce the salt content in bread to 1.5 percent based on the flour content, reports the Consumer Advice Center North Rhine-Westphalia. If the bread bakers do not move voluntarily and do without a strong pinch of salt, the consumer advocate believes that "limit values ​​for the salt content of the various bread and baked goods must be set by law in the future."
