Psychological problems limit every fourth employee in the job
Keeping the balance between professional and private life is possible for fewer and fewer people in the highly developed industrial countries. In a study by the Association of German Company and Company Doctors, around 39 percent of the survey participants indicated that they would take the workload and stress home with them. One in four of those surveyed also stated that they often or occasionally “had their tasks grinded” due to mental illnesses that had already occurred.
One in four neglects work due to psychological problems
The number of days of illness in Germany due to mental illnesses is increasing more and more according to various evaluations of the patient data. A study by the opinion and research institute GfK on behalf of the Association of German Occupational and Plant Physicians came to the conclusion that more than one in four employees permanently or temporarily neglected their job due to psychological stress. One in three said that emotional and emotional problems sometimes lead to restrictions in work. Only about 37 percent stated that such problems never or almost never affect their own professional lives. However, many workers take home the stress, strain and anger. 39 percent said they would hardly be able to cope with their professional tasks because of this.
The association sees the reasons in the change in social values that lead "away from traditional family life and personal relationships to a multidimensional" networking culture "and incapacity for relationships". In addition, the “reduction in working hours in the past decades has led to more work, and its complexity has increased. The dividing line between work and leisure can no longer be drawn clearly. All of these factors lead to more mental illnesses, ”said the doctors.
Increasing work density
The increasing downtimes due to mental illnesses are also putting an increasing strain on companies. For example, the president of the group, Wolfgang Panter, said on Tuesday in Berlin: “The increase in mental illness and the associated absenteeism of employees are challenging companies and company doctors. The company doctors emphasized that only sustainable solutions can reverse the trend. The doctors emphasized that this should include “prevention, early detection and therapies”.
The head of the association sees above all the senior employees as responsible. These must address vulnerable employees in good time. However, managers should not be tempted to "play the doctor". A lot of things can be broken with a lay diagnosis, so that eventually nothing works. Instead, superiors should give their employees tips on who can help with mental health problems. "But work can't just make you sick," says the company doctors. For many, work is an "important anchor for social relationships".
For the non-representative study, a total of 240 employees of different ages and different industries were interviewed. GfK conducted the survey online with volunteers. (sb)
