Study: Medicinal plant Galphimia glauca works for anxiety disorders

Mexican researchers were able to prove the effect of the plant extract of Galphimia glauca on anxiety disorders. The surprising thing: After a week, the patients reported an improvement.

With their study, the researchers wanted to check the empirical values from Mexican naturopathy. There, Galphimia is traditionally used as a tranquilizer for mental disorders. They also wanted to review the results of a previous study on the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of galphimia.

103 outpatient patients with generalized anxiety disorder were randomly given either a daily dose of up to 0.700 mg of the standardized extract galphimin-B in capsule form or 0.5 mg lorazepam over a period of 12 weeks. After the 12 weeks of therapy, there were three weeks of “withdrawal”.

According to the Hamilton anxiety scale used, the galphimia extract showed a significant superiority over the entire study period. In addition, fewer side effects were observed in the galphimia group.

Interestingly, it was found that a low dose of galphimine B extract had positive effects from the first week on in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.
