Prevent breast cancer by exercise

Even slight movements reduce the risk of breast cancer

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and sport, the lowest possible alcohol consumption and the avoidance of overweight, however, can significantly reduce the individual risk of illness, according to the current announcement of the cooperation group mammography in Berlin on the occasion of World Cancer Day today.

Even moderate sporting activities such as cycling, brisk walking or physical housework can have a significant effect on breast cancer prevention, reports the mammography cooperation group. Older women in particular would benefit from regular exercise. As a benchmark, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends "at least 150 minutes of regular physical activity of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of strenuous activity per week." According to the DKFZ report, "the risk of breast cancer in women who are regularly physically active after the menopause is about a third lower than that of their more sluggish counterparts."

Early detection can prevent fatal breast cancer. Since the risk of breast cancer increases significantly with age, according to the experts, older women in particular should make urgent use of the existing options for breast cancer prevention. For example, of 1,000 women over the age of 40, 15 would develop breast cancer within the next ten years, but the rate of illness among fifty-year-olds is already twice as high, reports the mammography cooperation group. The cooperative community states the average age of onset of breast cancer patients in its current press release at 63 years. Breast cancer cannot be avoided entirely, but early diagnosis can prevent a life-threatening course of the disease. Therefore, participation in preventive examinations such as mammography screening is particularly important.

With this method "even the smallest tumors can be found, to which there are no other indications," according to the Mammography Association. And the sooner the malignant cell growth in the breast is recognized, the better the outlook for the affected woman. If you can already feel lumps or noticeable deformities of the breast, "the tumors are usually larger than two centimeters" and the chances of healing are significantly lower, reports the cooperation group.
