Natural remedies: Licorice relieves discomfort after intubation

Licorice has been used in TCM for a long time. A current study has now scientifically proven the healing properties of this natural substance known as licorice. The effect was investigated in patients suffering from sore throat and hoarseness after an operation.

In their study, the researchers at the University Hospital Vienna examined patients who need a particularly thick tube after lung surgery and who therefore often suffer from a sore throat, hoarseness and cough.

Significant relief from licorice The administration of licorice significantly reduced the frequency of postoperative complaints. More importantly, the patients were extremely satisfied and complained about significantly fewer side effects associated with anesthesia, such as a sore throat, cough and hoarseness.

Mechanism of action still unknown The exact mode of action of licorice is still completely unclear. The research team is now working to decode this. In this context, the anti-inflammatory effect and the positive influence on local wound healing, for example in oral and maxillofacial surgery, appear to be of particular importance.
